Way back 20-something years ago, when I was in first grade, my classmates and I read from our basal readers and learned skills to help us in our reading, focusing largely on phonics, or, “sounding out.” We read stories focusing on certain sounds The purpose of early leveled readers (like the one above) is to have children understand and follow a simple pattern while thinking about the meaning of the story by checking the picture. Gotta maintain that literature/informational balance! This focus on rigor in reading is based on the goal that students understand the level of texts necessary for success in college and careers by the time they graduate from high school. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I thought the whole point of CC ELA was that everyone should be doing reading at grade level not "leveled texts." Or is that only for elementary school? This seemingly innocuous directive—to read appropriately complex texts and to use scaffolding to help students who are struggling understand what they've read—is perhaps the most revolutionary element of the Common Core standards.
